Newport, Rhode Island

Living in the hustle and bustle of New York City, I was yearning for not only a romantic and relaxing getaway with my boyfriend, but also a visit to a place with natural beauty in a true cultural setting. A good ride off the main highway, Newport, Rhode Island, gives off the genuine feeling of a departure from “Anywhereville USA” that we see in so many cities. The topography and architecture are unique and breathtaking and seems unchanged in recent years.

We decided to stay at the Cliffside Inn, one of the three bed and breakfasts that make up the Legendary Inns of Newport. We arrived late in the evening and were overwhelmed by the elegance and beauty of the home and its magnificent artwork. Our first site as we entered was a gorgeous Tiffany lamp inside a room filled with original painted self portraits of Beatrice Turner, who grew up in this very home. The furniture was all vintage antiques, including the beds, while the rooms were pristine and of utmost comfort. We stayed in the Governors Suite that included a king sized bed with homemade chocolates on the pillow, a fireplace, jacuzzi tub, and an original brass English shower …what an experience!

We awoke to an aroma of a home cooked breakfast, included in the stay. Breakfast was made to order with a selection of hot entrees including their signature rendition of eggs benedict over crab cakes. It was out of this world! There was also a buffet featuring fresh fruit and pastries.

Before we ventured out, I was filled with questions about both this place and things to do in Newport. The owner himself, Win Baker, provided us with fascinating information about Newport and the rich history behind this home and its art. He gave us personalized recommendations for capturing the true essence of Newport. He takes enormous pride in the fascinating background behind his acquisition of the home and his success in sharing this enriching experience with others.

We walked off breakfast at his first suggestion, the Cliff Walk, just steps away. As we walked along the path, which overlooks the ocean, we passed mansion after mansion, each one more impressive than the next. We made sure not to miss tea time at the Cliffside Inn, as they are known for their internationally acclaimed tea service, named one of the 20 best afternoon teas in America. We definitely saw and tasted how they earned this reputation. In addition to a variety of flavorful teas, they also served quiches, pies, and a bunch of other delicious treats. We deferred dinner that night, but could not pass up a late night lobster in the heart of Newport.

So whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or just a relaxing retreat, be sure to check out the Cliffside Inn and ask for Win!
